Joseph

Hello to all, I am Joseph, a Black, queer man that uses he/him pronouns. My intersecting identities have informed my understanding of the way culture, identity, and lived experiences influence mental health and relationships. I strive to create a collaborative, culturally responsive, and nonjudgemental space where clients feel heard, respected and empowered. I believe in a counseling style that focuses on helping clients build on their strengths and move toward meaningful change. I am a graduate student in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Portland State University. My counseling approach is grounded in Narrative Therapy and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy, with an emphasis on helping clients explore their stories, challenge limiting narratives, and develop new pathways for growth. I have a particular interest in working with BIPOC, LGBTQIA+ individuals, and clients who are navigating identity development, life transitions, relationships, and concerns related to self-esteem and personal growth. As I continue my training, I hope to specialize in supporting diverse communities through strengths based, culturally responsive, collaborative counseling. I strive to understand how each person’s intersecting identities, values, family, culture, and lived experiences influence the way they see themselves and navigate the world. I recognize that my own perspectives are continually evolving and I remain committed to ongoing self-reflection, learning and advocacy in my work as a clinician. I approach each therapeutic relationship with curiosity and humility, recognizing that clients are the experts of their own lives and experiences.
